Global Biodiversity Metric and Americas Biodiversity Metric

Ramboll

Developed to support effective measurement and informed decision-making for biodiversity management, these tools measure biodiversity value for a site based on key indicators of ecological integrity adapted from the Natural England Biodiversity Metric 4.0. There are two versions of the tool: the Americas Metric, currently focused on the Northeastern United States (with plans for expansion) and the Global Metric, which is tailored for the IUCN Global Ecosystem Typology and can be used for terrestrial and select freshwater and marine habitats (with more to be added in future versions). Inputs include: basic site and habitat information, considerations regarding habitat trading and any off-site gains,  and expected habitat enhancements. The results are expressed as a score in biodiversity units which allow for measuring baseline biodiversity value and tracking net gain or net loss over time. The Excel-based Metrics and PDF-based user guides can be accessed by providing an email address in the online form.

The LPS Benefits Toolkit is a compilation of online calculators and tools that can be used to estimate landscape performance. The Landscape Architecture Foundation (LAF) compiles and writes descriptions of the tools in the Benefits Toolkit. LAF has no involvement in the development, review, or maintenance of the tools. If you have questions or comments on the Toolkit itself, contact us at email hidden; JavaScript is required.
